During my time at Yarrington Mills Corp., I was able to produce various apparel designs for occasional creative projects the art team was assigned to. The images are mock-ups of what the finished designs would have looked like.
RUDIS Basketball Jersey
For this project, we were requested to design a sample uniform kit for a customer, Rudis, that used some old art elements from a past order. For my general branding kit, I chose a gnarled hawk sketch and updated the colors to include blue and orange. I wanted the art to seem lighter and more open as a design, while adding some texture that linked back to the style of the hawk in the form of the airy ombre cloudlines, which fade in and out of the main light blue background. Meanwhile, the orange is used minimally, only seen in small highlights of the bird, and in the team name, so that it would stand out more in contrast to blues and whites of the jersey.
YMC Lacrosse Uniform Sample
This was part of an update to the company’s current sample line up, which would then be presented for reference to customers as well as display items for conferences and trade shows. I was assigned the Lacrosse Uniform, which included both a jersey and a pair of shorts. Similar to the Rudis project, we were required to use art elements previously used in older orders. I found a stunning argyle pattern that utilized orange and white, so I decided to take a halloween spin on the pattern. I swapped out the main white accents with black, and had the pattern run across the body of the shorts rather than limiting them to a side-seam accent. I gave the look a more vintage grunge-look to reflect the mascot of the fake team, by adding texture in the form of black distress at the shoulders of the jersey and portions of the shorts, as well as combining block athletic fonts with a jagged scratchy sans-serif font for greater contrast and visual hierarchy.
Cisco Q-Zip Sample
This sample was to provide a customer with examples of Yarrington’s printing capabilities through sublimation. We were allowed complete creative freedom, so I chose to make a more fashion oriented quarter zip as opposed to a standard athletic team pull over, though after some revisions with the other team members, a fake team name was added to show that it could be customizable. I created an asymmetrical cut out on the front and back through the wave of bats that would lead the eye to the team name “vampyres”, and chose a limited color palette of black, white, and red so that each art element would further stand out. In order to create depth, I added a transparent block-print style vector of a bat in the background to further guide the eye toward the team name and white bat, as well as act as a lead-in to the bat wings on the sleeves. A grunge layover was added to give the apparel more texture and add to the horror aesthetic of the overall design.
This project was the culmination of my time and education at Drexel University. The goal of the project was for each student to helm the schedule, design, and production of a graphic design work that could focus on any topic within reason.
For my capstone, I wanted to create a collection of film analysis essays on women in modern American horror films, in the format of a coffee-table book. The biggest challenge of the project was trying to make the dense copy visually engaging while still retaining a sense of professional academia.
Style inspiration came from the gritty and grunge aesthetic of 70s Grindhouse movie posters, the era and sub-genere that the 3 main focus films originated from; I utilized this through my use of illustration via callout quotes. All the imagery used within the book, bar some spot illustrations I drew, are screen-grabs pulled from their respective movies or books that had access to higher quality stills.
Knock-down packaging project, with a redesign for a special edition packaging of Top Ramen instant noodles packs. My main inspirations for the image making and color palate were a mix of traditional Japanese illustrations and contemporary Japanese pop art. I made vectorized patterns that I rendered from scans of washi paper I had lying around, and digitally painted the other spot illustrations on either box.
Introductory project for Book Design course, with the purpose being to re-design covers for one classic novel and one contemporary novel. The stories were assigned at random, and it was highly encouraged to take separate styles for each cover: one with an illustration-centric style, and the other with more of an emphasis on typography.
I wanted The Sympathizer to be my illustration-heavy cover, due to the story’s rich and unique visual symbols. I collaged this two-headed baby out of magazine spreads and a random assortment of paper samples.
I made The Great Gatsby, meanwhile, as my type-centric cover. I took inspiration from the Art Deco and Harlem Renaissance movements, and utilized the Franklin Gothic typeface, as all three elements were contemporary styles and fonts in the historical setting of the novel.
Event branding concepts for Endless Summer Festival in 2018 in Ventnor, NJ. Logo design based on summer activities around the bay, like rowing, and an emblem layout was employed to give the concept a more traditional look; vibrant and warm colors are then utilized to contrast the traditional aspects of the composition in order to give it a playful and exciting tone.
Final project for the elective course Illustration for Graphic Design, a poster for a fictitious concert for any existing artist of our choice. I chose Grimes for my artist, and for the design, I wanted to embody her album illustration style; her art is typically very grunge and surreal, with either dull muted colors, or a bright and loud palette. I sketched multiple images, outlined them in sharpie, then scanned them in and digitally rendered them in Photoshop.
Welo App icon design and app store banner illustration concepts, assets assembled in Sketch.
Design concepts for a redesign of RealityRX’s Website. The orange used in the brand’s color schemes become a bigger focal point of the design, with flecks of white used to highlight key points of information.
First Project for Illustration for Graphic Design elective course. 11x 17 illustrations that utilized various mediums to best represent the following words: bombastic (sharpie markers and pens,) mystery (micron pen and watercolor,) and vast (watercolor and digital painting in Photoshop.)
Typography publication project. Purpose of the project was to create a type-rich mini publication based around the research and inspiration of a randomly assigned public attraction found in Philadelphia. For my publication, I incorporated a combination of the outdoor gardens, indicated by the natural color palette and an emphasis on greens for the front and back covers, and interior aesthetic and cultural style of the Shofuso house through item-specific photography. Universe fount was used for its clean and simple cut, to mimic the atmosphere of the house and gardens. Vibration and repetitive layering of callout text was used in order to replicate the texture of water rippling.
Movie poster redesign project for a randomly assigned film. After watching Get Out several times and doing research on the themes within the movie, I was able utilize several visual motifs to guide my design direction for the poster. The portrait illustration was a water color painting i made by using a combination of tea and coffee, and utilize dull earth tones for most of the piece with small, vibrant reds and blues as vibrant highlights. I wanted to give the design a very gritty look, to emulate the feeling and style of more retro horror movies, hence the distressed and scribbled heavy-weight sans serif font.
Final Self Portrait project from figure drawing course, along with several specific anatomy studies, and a page of gestural sketches.
A selection of pieces from various projects that were part of the Introductory Photography I and II courses.
Personal photography pieces, some of which were taken while participating in the Iki Cultural Exchange Program.
